Toolbox Talk: Cylinder Safety

Whether or not you use them personally, all construction employees are exposed to gas cylinders at one point or another. They contain many different types of gases that make our jobs easier and are very efficient tools. However, cylinders can also be very dangerous when misused, mishandled, or not stored properly. Proper care of cylinders can help eliminate these risks.

• Be sure of which gas is in a cylinder when using and wear the proper P.P.E. when handling. Information on properties and proper safety equipment to use when dealing with gases can be found by looking at SDS sheets or by calling the gas supplier.

• Always store cylinders in a dry, well-ventilated location away from other flammable substances.

• Oxygen cylinders in storage should be separated from fuel-gas cylinders or combustible materials (especially oil or grease) at a minimum distance of 20 feet or by a non-combustible barrier at least 5 feet high having a fire-resistance rating of at least one-half hour.

• Store full and empty cylinders separately.

• Never store cylinders in unapproved storage areas (i.e. Gang Box).

• Always remove gauges and regulators and install protective valve caps before transporting.
