Toolbox Talk: Excavation Inspections

The purpose of inspections in excavations is to prevent injuries and accidents resulting from the collapse of an excavation or trench. Employees must be properly trained to recognize potential hazards.

An excavation is defined by OSHA as Any man-made cut, cavity, trench, or depression in an earth surface formed by earth-removal.

Here are some important points to keep in mind before entering a trench:

• Excavation safety training will be provided to ALL employees working in/with excavations

• Excavations will be inspected at the following frequency:

  • BEFORE the start of work EACH day

  • as needed throughout a shift

  • after EVERY rainstorm

  • anytime an unusual occurrence affects the integrity of the excavation

• The following approved PPE is required with excavation work:

  • hard hat

  • safety glasses

  • safety-toe work boots

  • reflective vests where traffic is present
