Toolbox Talk: First Aid Kits

All too often, workers don’t bother to get first aid for minor injuries. They tend to underestimate the dangers of infection and “tough it out.” Other times, they realize they do not have an adequately stocked first aid kit and simply ignore the injury.

You likely subject yourself to more germs daily than you know. Employees who work in healthcare, wastewater, or even renovation-type environments are especially exposed to environmental bacteria and viruses.

There are two ways in which a poison can attack our bodies. It may be taken by the nose or mouth and enter the body by way of digestive organs, or it may enter directly into the bloodstream through an abrasion or cut in the skin. In any event, every poison eventually works its way into the bloodstream. The smallest cut, scratch, or abrasion is large enough for germs to enter. If they are not washed off, they could cause an infection which may lead to blood poisoning. If left untreated, a hand or arm could become so infected that it could have to be amputated.

If you find yourself with a small scratch or cut, be sure to get it washed out and properly covered with a clean bandage. Be sure to check your first aid kit to make sure it is adequately stocked so that when the time comes, you are prepared. If you need to restock your kit, alert your supervisor to obtain supplies. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Keep minor injuries minor. Well-stocked first aid kits and proper treatment are the keys to preventing infection.
