Toolbox Talk: Skid Steer Loaders

Many of our job sites use skid steer loaders. These handy machines can do a variety of things for us. They can do everything from loading or unloading trucks to breaking concrete to removing material from an inside demo job. One thing we should remember is that, even though these machines are commonly used, they can be very dangerous if used unsafely.

Points to Remember:

1. Only those workers who are trained and authorized by their supervisor shall operate skid steer loaders.

2. When operating the skid steer, give complete attention to the job at hand.

3. Drive slowly over rough ground being alert for holes, ditches, and irregularities that may cause the loader to overturn.

4. Avoid steep slopes that may cause the loader to overturn.

5. Reduce speed when turning so the loader does not overturn.

6. Always look behind you for workers before you back up.

7. Do not operate the loader while not in the seat with a seat belt on and the seat bar down.

8. Do not carry passengers or hoist workers in the bucket.

9. Always carry the bucket or attachment as low as possible.

10. Never operate the loader in an enclosed building without adequate ventilation.

11. Never exceed the rated operating capacity.

12. Use only buckets or attachments that are approved by the manufacturer for the loader that you are using.
