Toolbox Talk: Wet Concrete Safety

Wet concrete that is thoroughly and quickly washed off the skin will cause little irritation. However continuous contact between skin and wet concrete allows alkaline compounds to burn the skin. These exposures can lead to irritation or even contact dermatitis conditions. Symptoms can include stinging pain, itching, blisters, scabs, dead skin, and swelling.

Points to Remember:

1. Wear long sleeves and long pants.

2. Wear waterproof boots high enough to prevent concrete from flowing in.

3. Wear alkali-resistant gloves.

4. Wear safety glasses.

5. Pull sleeves over gloves and tuck pants inside your boots.

6. Use duct tape at the top of boots to keep concrete out.

7. Use a dry board or waterproof kneepads to protect pants from absorbing wet concrete when kneeling on fresh concrete.
