Toolbox Talk: Wheelbarrow Safety

Wheelbarrows are essential roofing tools that can be hazardous when used incorrectly. When working with wheelbarrows, follow these guidelines.

Points to Remember:

1. Use wheelbarrows that are in good condition.

2. Make sure wooden handles are not broken or splintered.

3. Be certain a wheelbarrow’s tires are inflated properly.

4. Make sure rubber tires do not have any gouges.

5. Make sure a wheel guard protects the front of the wheel.

6. Wear sturdy leather gloves to protect your hands.

7. Remember to use good lifting techniques when lifting a wheelbarrow load—use your legs,

not your back.

8. Keep your back straight when pushing a load.

9. Fill a wheelbarrow to a manageable level.

10. If possible, place sheets of plywood on a roof’s surface to designate your path.

11. Walk at a speed that will allow you to maintain control of the wheelbarrow.

12. Make sure your path is free of obstructions.

13. Place wheel stops in front of trash chutes or dumping areas to alert you to stop and provide leverage for lifting the wheelbarrow.

14. Use proper fall protection around the trash chute area.

15. Guardrails installed around trash chute ramps can keep you from falling if you lose control.

16. A safety monitor must observe workers using wheelbarrows outside warning lines.

17. Use wheelbarrows with two tires if possible.

18. Fix or replace defective parts, such as flat tires or loose handles.

A wheelbarrow, like any other tool or piece of equipment, must work properly to be effective and safe.
