Local Projects of Distinction Honored by ABC-Wisconsin

Each year, we dust off the trophy case and make room for more Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) of Wisconsin Projects of Distinction Awards, and this year was no different. The Friede Team earned six awards for local projects and, for the seventh straight year, we were awarded the ABC-Wisconsin Built On Merit Award.
Projects from contractors throughout the state were judged in a rigorous process by a panel of construction experts based on a number of criteria, including safety, quality, owner satisfaction, execution and coordination, budgeting, difficulty, unusual challenges, and overall distinctiveness.
“This is an opportunity to recognize the professionalism of our contractor members who perform outstanding work for a wide variety of clients in areas like manufacturing, hospitality, and education,” said John Mielke, ABC of Wisconsin president. “What makes the Projects of Distinction Awards program so special is that none of these award-winning projects are ordinary. Each one is unique and interesting.”
The following Friede projects were recognized as some of Wisconsin’s most impressive and unique construction projects in 2018:
Vintage Brewing Company | Sauk City | Gold Award - Commercial $2 million to $10 million Category
This 26,000 square-foot, micro-brewery, restaurant, and conference center offers panoramic views of the Wisconsin River, a seasonal outdoor beer garden, 40 tap lines in the main bar, and a beautiful 250-person wedding and banquet area.
Sundara Woodland Retreats | Lake Delton | Gold Award - Commercial $2 million to
$10 million Category
As part of the expansion of their spa services, Sundara Inn & Spa at the Wilderness Resort sought to develop another guest lodging option for their clients. Friede & Associates worked with the owners of Sundara to develop two four-unit buildings, along with an 80-foot elevated connector and a 1,200-square-foot quiet room that are situated behind the main spa complex.
Chula Vista Fire Restoration | Wisconsin Dells | Silver Award - Restoration & Renovation Category
Following a lightning strike, Friede & Associates worked with the owner and their insurance carrier to identify the full extent of the damage and to create a plan for the reconstruction. The Friede Team then removed and replaced nearly 200 feet of upper wall sections, installed a new roof system, and retextured the Exterior Insulation Finishing System (EIFS) of the area below the wall replacement, all while keeping the waterpark open during construction.
Chula Vista Employee Housing and Laundry | Wisconsin Dells | Silver Award – New Residential Multi-Unit Category
This project involved constructing three 32-unit employee apartment buildings, as well as a new 12,000 square foot laundry facility. To meet a tight construction schedule, this project utilized panelized wood-framed construction. This construction method ensured the project was delivered on time and on budget.
Nelson Agri-Center | Viroqua | Silver Award – Restoration & Renovation Category
The Friede Team performed extensive interior and exterior renovations for Nelson Agri-Center True Value. New lighting fixtures, ceiling panels, and windows transformed this aging retail space into a bright, modern space. Exterior renovations include redesigned entryways and façades, columns, and roof canopy as well as new sidewalks and asphalt paving.
Ochsner Park Zoo River Otter Exhibit | Baraboo | Silver Award – Community & Public Service Category
One of the more unique projects of the year, Friede worked with the Friends of the Baraboo Zoo to design and build the new River Otter Exhibit at Ochsner Park.
